Summary From the Book Madhurya, the Rasa of Sweetness
In this chapter, we get to know about Vraja Gopis' exalted state of love from Manjari Bhava by acharyas of Gaudiya Sampradaya reports. These reports tell us about the unity of expression which is in Radhe Shyam Madhur Rasa. These are from experiences in Manjari Bhava that coexist with Gopi Bhava. Manjaris carry out many mechanisms but not all, they do not experience the pastime from the same angle of view as gopis do, especially those having direct conjugal relationship with the Lord.
Despite a high degree of surrender and intimacy in Madhurya Bhava, not every soul will experience this kind of relationship with the Lord, as there are five types of Rasa- Neutrality, Servitude, Friendship, Parental affection and Conjugal Love. There are nevertheless intersections between them and the classic case is that of manjaris, which coexist directly and closely with the conjugal relationship of the Lord with Vraja Gopis. This type of mixture diversifies the Lilas.
Mixed pastimes consist of webs of different bhavas and Shri Krishna reciprocates concomitantly with the bhavas. Bhava is the mood of relationship with Krishna, which is very specific within a rasa in particular. It is different according to the specificity of each soul (Sthayibhava).
Manjaris are teenage girls who eternally serve Shrimati Radharani in Her loving lila with Shyam. In strict sense Manjari Bhava exists in dasya and/or sakhya, developed inside Madhurya Rasa Universe of Krishna with Shri Radha and other gopis, but madhurya in strict sense is experienced only by Shri Radha and other gopis that relate conjugally with Shyam.
This chapter consists of Madhurya Rasa Lila of Krishna as revealed by means of Manjari Bhava acharyas of Gaudiya Sampradaya. The work written by them as they lived transcendental experience in their Manjari siddha dehas can be classified into three types of literary works that -
(A) Systematize the science of Rasa Tattva
(B) Divide the time in the Vraja forested environment
(C) Transfers impressions on the sentiments that abound in Krishna's Madhurya Lila.
Jaiva Dharma by Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakura is full of transcendental realizations. He openly revealed his experiences in Manjari Bhava. Introducing the Madhurya Rasa, the author says it is extremely confidential and is experienced by
(a) Krishna who is vishaya aalambana (object of love)
(b) Vraja Gopis and Shrimati Radharani which are ashraya aalambana (the lovers)
The present book adds Keshava wives in Dwarka who are in Swakiya Madhurya Rasa. Some authors conclude the relationship of lovers (Parakiya Madhurya Rasa) is higher than that of wives (Swakiya Madhurya Rasa).
From the impression I got from my interaction with Krishna Himself as contained in Rasa Tattva (2014), the word higher is not ideal to use when comparing the relationship of gopis with those of wives. Shri Krishna there explained that love of gopis makes itself very exalted because of acceptance of para bhava (extraconjugal affection) but the relationship He has with wives is not lower than parakiya. These are only two different ways of attracting the Source of Attraction that cause the world of conjugal love’s conformation.
Srila Vishwanatha Chakravarti Thakura explains in Madhurya Kadambini that when there is prema, intense and pure love for Shri Krishna, the source of all love, the feeling is so unconditional that the soul cries for it day and night. In this state the soul does not allow itself to think about anything more than its Lord. This is experienced by gopis and wives.
Questions/Answers
Dialogue between V d and Guru Ma Shri
1. What is the main difference between Manjari Bhava and Gopi Bhava? What are their sthayibhavas respectively and what is the vishaya aalambana of their bhavas respectively?
The main difference between the two bhavas is precisely in the vishaya aalambana, because for the Manjaris, that object of adoration is Radharani. In Gopi Bhava, the vishaya aalambana is Krishna. The Manjaris' sthayibhava is filled with the desire to serve Shri Radhe, satisfying Her through opportunities for Her to express Her love for (with) Krishna. The sthayibhava of the Gopis is filled with the intention of giving pleasure to Krishna, the pleasure that a lover with passion feels when He delights with His beloved(s).
2. Is the mood of being Krishna's consort (Gopi Bhava) and the mood of being a friend/servant of Krishna's consort (Manjari Bhava) both present or required for the soul in Gopi Bhava?
Gopis and Manjaris relate to Krishna in different ways, but they are all His servants. The Gopis serve Him by giving Him extramarital pleasure, while the Manjaris serve Him by building opportunities for His conjugal experiences with the Gopis and Radha to take place. Gopis are not established in Manjari Bhava and Manjaris are not in Gopi Bhava, but they play together in Madhurya Rasa Lila.
3. Is Manjari bhava of souls directed towards Shri Radharani or is it directed towards other consorts of the Lord as well? Is there a place for Manjari Bhava in Dwarka Lila?
The main object of love in Manjari Bhava is Shri Radhe, but they are also attracted to Krishna's other consorts. Similarly, there are Manjaris in Dwarka Lila, who create opportunities for Krishna to enjoy conjugal attraction with His Wives. They are just not mentioned in previous literature, because there have not yet been authors who have experienced Manjaris with the Lord's Wives, describing them in books, like those who have experienced Manjari Bhava in Vraja Lila.
4. Since desire for conjugal love comes from Radhe Shyam which makes souls seek such love what happens to this desire of personal associates of the Lord who relates to Him in other bhavas? Since whatever relationship we have with the Lord is most desirable for us then does desire for seeking conjugal love cease in that soul who relates to the Lord in bhava other than Madhurya Bhava?
When Krishna's associates are with Him in other bhava, they can realize the conjugal love of Radhe Shyam through their own conjugal relationships, which, in unity with the Divine Couple, complete them fully. I describe this kind of perfect interaction in the book Radha Krishna, the Sun of the Union between the Twin Flames. This book explains how the desire to seek conjugal love actually ceases in the soul who relates to Krishna intimately in any bhava.
