Figure 1 - Krishna and Gopis (source: Bodleian Library).
A Summary from the Book Madhurya, the Rasa of Sweetness
Such love goes beyond the human linear mind and cannot be described in written or spoken words. Krishna flute further kindles love in Gopi's hearts, their minds were already captivated by Him and they rush in the direction of flute music in such haste that nobody realizes each other’s endeavors.
While Krishna’s wives during water games come close to Him on the pretext of taking syringe from His hand and embracing the Beloved to their hearts. Their love increases more by His touch and their face blooms.
The love which is felt in such conditions is very powerful, it creates unbearable scorching in heart. Hence the Gopis leave all their work and rush towards Krishna. Krishna then jokes with the Gopis and asks them to return to Vraja.
He also jokes with Shri Rukmini and asks Her to be wise and choose an eminent Kshatriya who is a match for Her. This creates feelings of restlessness in the heart that is completely surrendered to God (Krishna).
This causes Vipralambha to manifest and increase their attachment to Him. These disturbing events are full of bliss and love that is why Krishna causes them as part of His loving exchanges with His consorts. Distance increases intension to love Him and words of anxiety are symptoms of such intention.
So the Gopis sing that “your laugh, loving glances, covet jests uttered in secret went deep into our hearts, they agitate our mind now that you are away from us”. Shri Radha shows the feelings of Vipralambha in dialogue with the black bee.
Shri Rukmini also underwent a moment of intense suffering and after that asks what woman with clear insight into the real purpose of life could seek another husband after intimate association with Krishna. There can be no such woman because Krishna's association in Madhurya Bhava occurs only when there is an eternal state of mind with no return.
Krishna is eager to enjoy symptoms of love of His consorts and grants favorable occasions for symptoms to occur. On one such occasion He overcame Gopis shame by stealing their clothes during the month of Margashirsha when Gopis observed a vow to worship Goddess Katyayani seeking boon to have Him as their husband.
Shri Rukmini also asks for His grace and prays to take Her as His wife. She reinforces Her feelings and stands that she shall lay down Her life withered through fasting in hope for securing His grace through a hundred births.
Notes and Conclusion
Gopis and wives irradiate to the world their restless sensations caused by passionate and intense love for the Lord. This happens from experience of prema (pure love) that the counterparties live. They belong to Him, while aspects of Shri Radhe. Krishna causes restlessness and intensifies the relationship, creating particular occasions so that He can experience effects of what is causing.
Gopis and wives, all of which are in Shri Radhe - reciprocate with their controller and exist in perfect unity with Krishna. Soul independent of one's rasa should aspire for this state of mind because it expresses deep and unconditional surrender to God and His purposes and mechanisms.
Madhurya Bhava is difficult to understand as its expressions do not belong to the world of material form. The intention here is to help at least some to understand the universe of those who experience the most intimate coziness of Krishna - the Gopis of Vraja and Queens of Dwarka.
Questions/Answers
Dialogue between V d and Guru Ma Shri
1) Does Krishna love all His consorts equally or is there inequality because we cannot love Him as much as Shri Radha does? Can I have the same deep loving relationship with Him like He has with Shri Radha or is that not possible for souls? Even if Krishna and I do not share such deep love as He shares with Shri Radha, will He still be happy with me? Does Krishna love other Gopis and is happy in their company or He just goes to them because of His compassion and on Shri Radha's insistence?
When we are One with Shri Radha the love She feels for Krishna is the same that fills our heart. When we are One with Shri Radha the deep loving relationship with Him that She has is the love that we live because in transcendental world of madhurya rasa the soul is transcended and a divine being united with God becomes the only reality to be lived. This divine being shares Radhe Shyam lila as Her/His own lila because of the unity with them. That’s why Krishna is fully happy with all gopis and wives independent of Shri Radha’s (Rukmini’s) insistence. Her insistence exists because She wants to serv Him through diversified ways of loving the supreme One.
2) What if a soul is not originally one of Shri Radha's expansion and desire to love Lord in conjugal mood? How can we know rasa that we desire is same as our original rasa? Do all souls have some fixed rasa with the Lord? What if it is different from rasa we desire to love the Lord? Does Guru (Ma) reveal our rasa? Please if you could tell me exactly in what bhava I belong to Krishna.
If a soul is not originally one of Shri Radha’s expansion, her or his desire to love the Lord in conjugal mood is an illusionary necessity. When you are not deluded by physical senses and mind, the rasa you desire is always the same as your original rasa. That’s because our rasa is really fixed, being eternal as it is, our original way of existing by the Lord’s side. The way we live in the external world is transitory and also the desires we have and that don’t belong to our eternal way to exist with Krishna. When the Guru (Ma) is awakened to divine transcendental lila, he or she reveals the original rasa for the sincere, confident, truthful disciple. I myself can tell my disciples what their bhava are because I see it transparently through my position within the Divine Couple. But I only tell them through the Neo Bhagavata initiations I give.
3) Will Krishna be happy with me? Please tell me if you have any intuition regarding what my relationship with Krishna is because you are one with Divine Couple. Even if I don't realise my relationship with Him now because of the conditioned state of my mind still I wish to know if I am His beloved so that I can confidently direct my emotions towards Him without feeling that He will not feel happy. I also wonder if depending on music from outside for meditation is good, should I also try to meditate on Krishna without help of music by taking His name or just simply trying to meditate on His form or Lilas. Music gives lot of help and triggers emotions especially devotional music of saints like Mira Bai but still I feel if I will have to always depend on music for these wonderful feelings to come. What shall I do?
Krishna is always happy with His associates and pure devotees. Try to be one of them right now and I will give you the initiations preparing yourself for your eternal relationship with the Lord. Your conditioned state is not your real way to exist, and I can see this ultimate reality of yours. Even without giving initiation for a while, you don’t need to be afraid about not making Krishna happy. His pure devotion exists to fill His heart with love and happiness and devotion is a part of the process of propagating sat-cit-ananda for the world from His part. In this state of purity, we really don’t need anything from outside to help us triggering emotions of love for Him but while we are still here, music helps our moments of meditation. There is no problem in using them because when the times come to go back to the eternal completely there will be no traces of all these stuffs. We will be pulled for Radha Krishna’s perfect love forever.
